The MURR Center operates under strictly enforced Federal, State
and University regulations to ensure the safety of our employees,
visitors and the community. Although everyone at MURR has an individual
responsibility for occupational safety, the Center employs a dedicated
professional staff specifically focussed on providing a safe workplace
for the students, faculty and staff that use the reactor facility
as well as all who visit. This staff is responsible for ensuring
full compliance with regulations concerning radiation safety, hazardous
materials and the environment.
- Health Physics provides radiation safety reviews and
job coverage for operations and research activities. This includes
dosimetry
services, radio-analytical
capability, environmental monitoring and instrument calibration.
- Occupational Safety provides technical support in
the areas of fire safety, hazardous materials, industrial hygiene
and occupational safety.
- Quality Assurance provides assistance and oversight
for quality programs in operational groups.
- Training provides planning, coordination and development
of training programs to meet regulatory requirements and facility
needs.
MURR staff members receive initial training upon first reporting
for work at the Center, and annually undergo training on various
safety and security issues. Individuals receive special training
and refresher courses as needed depending upon their specific
work assignments.
