As early as 1989 the MURR Center has participated in a summer-long, intensive
research program sponsored by the National Science Foundation
(NSF). These summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates
(REU) programs are expressly designed to whet the appetites
of college undergrads towards enrolling in graduate school. The
program offers a tantalizing taste of the in-depth research required
for graduate degrees. The program is selective, drawing top
applicants from around the country, matching their backgrounds
and scientific interests with MU and MURR faculty mentors. The
participants, about 10 per summer, define and then conduct their
projects under guidance from their mentors, attend and participate
in multidisciplinary lectures and discussion sessions, and conclude
their summer experience with a formal presentation. Stay tuned to learn more about
the Summer 2009 REU Program in Radiochemistry.
A second intensive summer educational program, this one awarded
to MU's Nuclear Science and
Engineering Institute, offers Nuclear Science and Engineering
for Secondary Science Teachers. As a guest-host, the MURR
Center gives these workshop participants an opportunity no other
state can matchhands-on learning and experience at the premier
university research reactor in the nation. The summer of
2007 will mark the 26th summer for this one-week course, comprehensive
enough to earn the teachers three hours of graduate credit from
the MU College of Engineering.
More than 550 teachers from some 250 schools across Missouri
and the Midwest have participated in past years.
