MURR'S Analytical Chemistry Staff —Trace Element Epidemiology

J. Steven Morris is a senior research scientist at the University of Missouri Research Reactor (MURR) and the Harry S Truman Memorial Veterans Administration Hospital. He received his BS in chemistry from Central Missouri State University in 1966 and PhD in chemistry from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1973. He was a member of the chemistry department faculty at Lincoln University between 1970 and 1973 and joined the MURR staff in 1973.

Dr. Morris’ primary research interest is in the broad area of application of nuclear analysis methodologies in the life sciences. More specifically, for the last 25 years, he has led a trace-element epidemiology program at the MURR Center in collaboration with many nutritional epidemiology groups in the United States and Great Britain. This program has been instrumental in the development and characterization of biologic monitors of dietary intake and environmental and occupational exposure to trace nutrients and redistributed toxic elements; and the application of these monitors in large population-based studies of trace elements and risk of chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes.
